Video on Demand FAQ’s

What are the minimum computer requirements to view the class?

How do I get the password and username to access the videostream?

Answer: Only registered students are able to access the videostreams. If you are a registered student, type in your UH username and password to access class session. If you do not have an UH username and password please go to http://myuhportal.hawaii.edu to obtain one.

Can I use any other programs (RealPlayer, Windows Media Player) to view the VOD besides Quicktime?

Answer: No, the videostream files are encoded in MPEG4 format and can only be viewed by using Quicktime.

Why can’t I access classes ahead of the current week?

Answer: The purpose of the VOD is to provide students registered in cable courses to view class sessions missed due to broadcast or technical difficulties. It is NOT intended as an alternative delivery for cable courses. Registered students are still required to view or videotape cable broadcasts of each class session and not rely on VOD to complete their course.

Why can’t I access classes’ two weeks (or more) prior of the current week?

Answer: The VOD service only allows users to access two weeks of programs (the current week and previous week). The programs after two weeks will be disabled.

The semester is over and I can’t get access the classes. Why is that?

Answer: After the last day of class, access to courses will be disabled immediately to prevent copyright infringement on the programs and instructors.

I've typed in the Username and Password but get the message "Forbidden. You don't have permission to access..." What am I doing wrong?

Answer: When logging in to view the videostreams you MUST enter both your username and password in LOWERCASE.

I am unable to view the QuickTime streams after entering the username and password. What could be the problem?

Answer: This may occur if you are behind a firewall or using a router. To view the QuickTime stream, follow the set-up instructions below to configure QuickTime for use behind a firewall.

How to set up QuickTime

Mac OS X
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the System Preferences Panel, choose QuickTime. The QuickTime preferences pane appears.
Click on the Streaming tab.
Choose your Streaming Speed from the drop down menu (If unsure, select "Automatic").
Click Advanced.
Set the Transport Setup to "Automatic".

Windows
Click Start and point to Control Panels.
Open the QuickTime control panel.
From the pop-up menu, choose Streaming Transport.
Click Automatically determine the best protocol and port ID.

If QuickTime is able to configure itself for use behind a firewall, you should be able to watch a streamed movie.

I cannot view the QuickTime Streams. I am using a router or I am behind a firewell. What could be the problem?

Answer: If you are using routers, you must open up corresponding Quicktime application ports. For network routers e.g Linksys, Netgear, SMC etc, open up UDP ports 6970-6999. For TCP port 554 must be allowed. If you are not sure how to do this, please refer to the operators manual for router. If you have firewalls on your computer, you must disable your firewalls.

Who can I contact if I need some help?

Answer: Any questions regarding the VOD service should be done through your instructor. Any other technical questions can be referred to your instructor, or emailed to the Video On Demand technical support staff at vod-support-l@hawaii.edu.
